Symptoms of depression vary from person to person. But the common link for any of these symptoms is that they continue for a prolonged period of time.
Symptoms of depression may include:
Emotional symptoms:
- Persistent sadness, anxiety, or “empty” mood
- Feelings of hopelessness or pessimism
- Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, or helplessness
- Loss of interest or pleasure in hobbies and activities
Physical symptoms:
- Fatigue or decreased energy
- Insomnia or oversleeping
- Appetite or weight changes
Aches, pains, headaches, or digestive problems without a clear physical cause
Cognitive symptoms:
- Difficulty concentrating, remembering, or making decisions
- Slowed thinking or movement
- Thoughts of death or suicide
For a diagnosis of depression, these symptoms must last for at least two weeks and represent a change from previous functioning.
